This barn in South Norfolk had a rear terrace which in reality was not a usable external space. The concrete base with circular brick pattern took up much of the space, making it a transitory area of the garden. With its south-westerly aspect, it had the potential to be a large growing and entertaining space. The area had no existing drainage so the site was dug up entirely with a new channel linking to an underwater pump to move water away from the terrace. The choice of materials is natural limestone with weathered steel edging and gravel for natural drainage. A timber framed pergola is painted black to match the existing outbuilding and provides shade to the raised terrace.
