BALMORE HOUSE

This end of terrace home on the edge of Highgate and Hampstead Heath is an exercise in how to deal with an oddly shaped urban plot. Being adjacent to a footpath with a triangular footprint, the site needed a response which balanced privacy, security, daylight and all the other needs of modern life.

The property was extended at ground level to the rear and side as well as a full house refurbishment. We were involved throughout the process including a full interior design package to ensure continuity.

The rear and side elements to the ground floor are faced with Portland Stone, giving a scale and calmness to the building. This material was chosen due to its inherent visual qualities and it being mined in Dorset with a low embodied carbon value.

The project involves a deep retrofit with an air source heat pump to provide both heating and cooling to the building. As such there are no radiators in any of the new spaces in the house, maximising usable space.

A circular opening is formed to the dining space with the internal walls finished with a natural clay plaster.

The internal spaces involve carefully considered joinery items to fit the clients’ particular specifications. We worked in detail with all the suppliers and specified all of the internal finishes as part of our package of work.
